PLW Modelworks is proud to be a part of the dynamic, leading edge Birdly project through the contribution of 3D data from our San Francisco model.
Birdly is a design research project developed at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) that allows for full body, fully immersive flight simulation using virtual reality (VR). Man has dreamed of flying like a bird for millennium and now that dream can become a reality!
Following the release of the first demo video, the VR project went viral with over one million views over the course of a weekend. Through an advanced pairing of sensory and environmental feedback, Birdly allows users to fly through a virtual world as a bird.
Right now that virtual world includes a model created at PLW Modelworks in Melbourne, FL. Our San Francisco 3D model covers over 140 square kilometers and includes more than 80,000 buildings as well as iconic bridges and landmarks.
The project will be on display for its US debut at swissnex San Francisco before soaring on to SIGGRAPH 2014 in Vancouver. As one of the top three nominees for Augmented/Virtual Reality applications at SIGGRAPH, Birdly will be presented at the Real Time Live! Interactive Extravaganza. Congrats to all involved in the Birdly project!
