PLW was honored to exhibit at the 38th National Veterans Wheelchair Games July 31 – August 3 in the Greenlight Hall (set up for VR experiences for the veterans and their families) at the Orange County Convention Center. The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is co-presented each year between the Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America. The Games serve Veterans with Spinal Cord Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Amputations and other central neurological impairments with the goal to increase their independence, healthy activity and quality of life through wheelchair sports and recreation. Veterans are being exposed to wheelchair sports at their home VAMC or PVA Chapters as part of their rehabilitation to improve function, independence and getting them active in their home communities in sport and fitness.
During the games, disabled veterans and their families were given the chance to experience PLW’s industry leading 3D city models through multiple VR platforms, including Birdly, a fully-immersive bird flight simulator, and our own CityVR application. Through these VR apps, veterans could experience the art of flight by virtually “flying” through our cities. The veterans were excited to fly around cities they were familiar with and had visited as well as to experience new cities they had only heard about. It was great to see so many positive reactions from the veterans and many of them referred to the experiences as therapeutic. Many representatives for various VA facilities around the country stopped by to discuss the applicability of VR applications for their patients, which we found to be very interesting and was not a use case of our 3D models we had considered!
Thank you to Full Sail and all the other venders in Greenlight Hall for putting this all together and making for an unforgettable time for some of our veterans and their families. All in all, it was a remarkable event and we are grateful that we were given a chance to show veterans and their families what PLW 3D city models are all about.
